Doctoral Study Programme in Law

About

The Postgraduate Doctoral Study Programme at the University of Rijeka Faculty of Law is a study programme devoted to the field of social sciences in general and law in particular. The Programme is created for aspiring law graduates or graduates in other disciplines who wish to engage into an independent research on important and innovative legal topics. The program offers opportunities for students planning careers in teaching and academia, as well as for practitioners who wish to contribute to the contemporary intellectual discourse on the scientific level. In recent years we brought together academics and practitioners focusing on various legal topics ranging from human rights protection, data protection, personality rights infringement on the Internet, electronic payments, parallel importation, state aid, alternative investment funds and crowfunding to bareboat charters, governing structures of port authorities and pactum antichereticum.

The Programme admits no more than 20 students. Admission is announced every year by means of a public call. Students can choose whether they want to study as full-time (which usually takes 3 years) or part-time students (which usually takes 6 years). The Programme consists of one mandatroy and five elective courses, for which students need to prepare in advance, and the prevalent independent research, by means of which students acquire the knowledge and skills needed for writing a successful research paper focusing on the problematics of legal science. The Programme offers individual approach to study planning given the fact that it almost entirely adapts its content to the doctoral student and his or her provisional doctoral dissertation topic, whereby the latter is defined in agreement with the mentor prior to submitting the application.

The Programme is aimed at achieving excellence in scientific education. Doctoral students take courses tailored to their specific areas of interest and are encouraged to develop high academic standards of independent and innovative research. The Faculty offers a stimulating research environment through its international network, guest lectures, seminars and conferences, data service, project involvement and the very Doctoral Programme. In addition to these benefits, each doctoral student has to make a study visit to a scientific institutional abroad. The Programme is based on the ECTS system which contributes to student mobility and thus provides opportunities for students to take courses or conduct research at other universities or to transfer from other universities and programmes.

Upon completion of the Programme, students are awarded the academic title of Doctor of Legal Science in the field of Social Sciences, the subject of Law.

Training

We are dedicated to continuous training of both students and mentors to facilitate culture for academic success and professional development. We thus organise numerous joint or individual workshops and courses at the Faculty or in collaboration with other institutions.

Doctoral Workshop for Mentors

The aim of Doctoral Workshops for Mentors is to help mentors evaluate the degree of their preparation for successful supervision of doctoral students through practical case studies. These workshops also help mentors to enhance their mentoring skills and competencies.

Information for doctoral students and mentors

One-day orientation meetings are held twice a year with the aim of informing doctoral students about their rights and obligations, available research tools and facilities, ethical standards  of scientific research at the Faculty, and building personal network. On this occasion doctoral students are offered basic materials concerning the Programme, including legal documents, Guide for Doctoral Students, information on using library sources and researching databases.  At this event doctoral students meet the Director and the Secretary of the Doctoral Study Programme, academic staff of the Faculty, and  their peers. Students are also made aware of the opportunities for research cooperation, in particular within the framework of the Faculty research projects.  In addition, they are shown two rooms dedicated to their work, research and meetings (keys to the rooms are at all times available in the doorman’s booth) and are introduced to the Communication Coordinator.

The Communication Coordinator is a student of the Doctoral Study Programme who offers other doctoral students informal support in the course of their studies, especially by coordinating their meetings in the rooms devoted to their work or elsewhere and administrating  forum discussions  at the Teaching Repository. This way doctoral students may discuss issues of their interest with their colleagues and share information about seminars, workshops, conferences, databases, materials, scholarships, experiences, etc. This may in turn encourage  them to be more efficient in meeting the requirements of the Programme. The current Communication Coordinator is Ines Matić and is available by e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Successful completion of the Doctoral Study Programme is subject to several factors, first, the attitude of doctoral student towards his or her study obligations and, second, his or her relationship with the mentor. For the purpose of preparing doctoral students and their mentors for their roles, two guides have been prepared: one for doctoral students and one for mentors. In addition, institutional support is available in the form of education, meetings and communication with colleagues and the Director of the Doctoral Study Programme.
