Summer School connecting the SEELS network took place at the Saarland University
From 8th until 21st July 2018, the Summer School in European Competition Law and Protection of Intellectual Property took place at the Europa-Institut, Saarland University in Saarbruecken, Germany. It was organized within the framework of the thematic network SEE EU Cluster of Excellence in European and International Law, and it was financially supported by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany. Croatian participants were among many participants – postgraduate students from faculties within the SEELS network , in which our faculty is a member as well, while Ivana Kunda, associate professor of our faculty, had one-day lectures on intellectual property.
ELESS 2018 – European Law and Economy Summer School
The first summer school organised in cooperation between the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Ika, with the support of the Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung ended on 13 July 2018. 26 students from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy and Slovenia participated in this year’s summer school.
ELESS: European Law and Economy Summer School has achieved its main objective of becoming an ideal summer meeting point for students in social sciences, primarily law and economics. Set in a stimulating environment and applying innovative learning methods and multidisciplinary approaches, ELESS has provided students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and competences about legal and socio-economic aspects of the functioning of the European Union. The lectures and workshops were held in English and organised within 2 modules: Legal aspects of the EU and Socio-economic aspects of the EU. A multidisciplinary team of 20 lecturers consisted of professors and practitioners with many years of research and experience in the presented topics.
The official opening started with speeches by Prof Dr Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Rector of the University of Rijeka, Prof Dr Vesna Crnić-Grotić, Dean of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and Prof Dr Dora Smolčić-Jurdana, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management. On the last day of the school, special guest lecture via video link was held by Prof Dr Vesna Tomljenović, the Croatian judge at the General court of the EU.
TV interview on the 5th anniversary of Croatian membership in the EU
The President of the Rijeka Branch of the Croatian Bar Association Nada Badurina and the Faculty of Law in Rijeka Vice-Dean for Research Ivana Kunda appeared in a Kanal RI TV-show PlanetRi on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of Croatian membership in the EU and the ceremony which was organised at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka on 28 June 2018. They mentioned many advantages of being an EU Member State, commented on the Croatian efforts in harmonising Croatian law with the EU law, and especially the contribution of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka being the first faculty in Croatia to recognise the importance of education on EU law through two courses on EU law and EU Law Clinic at the graduate level and a postgraduate specialist programme “Law on European Integration”.

Ceremony celebrating 5 years of Croatia's membership in the European Union
On 28 June 2018, ceremony celebrating 5 years of Croatian membership in the European Union, which coincides with the 45th anniversary of legal studies in Rijeka and University of Rijeka, was held at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka.
In the opening speeches the audience was addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka Prof. Dr. Vesna Crnić-Grotić, the Rector of the University of Rijeka Prof. Dr. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, the President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia Miroslav Šeparović and the State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice Dr. Kristian Turkalj, on behalf of the Croatian Prime Minister. A round table that followed involved discussions by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice Dr. Kristian Turkalj, the President of the Civil Division of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia Damir Kontrec, the President of the High Administrative Court of the Republic of Croatia Ante Galić, Judge at the County Court in Rijeka Filka Pejković, Public Notary Stevan Pejnović and member of the Management Board of the Croatian Bar Association Zoran Vukić.
The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Dario Đerđa, Vice-Dean for Business Affairs, while the concluding remarks were given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivana Kunda, Vice-Dean for Research. The experts from the Ministry of Justice, judiciary, attorneys at law, public notaries and academia discussed the influence of the European Union legal system over Croatian legal system, the steps taken so far with the aim of harmonising Croatian law with the EU law, and various challenges that the Croatian judiciary faces in relation to the implementation of the European acquis. The discussion continued during the reception.
Agreements on Cooperation with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia and High Administrative Court of the Republic of Croatia Signed on 28 June 2018
As a part of the ceremony organised on 28 June 2018 at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka celebrating 5 years of Croatian membership in the EU, the Faculty signed agreements on cooperation with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia and the High Administrative Court of the Republic of Croatia. The Agreement of Cooperation between the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia was signed by the Faculty of Law Dean Vesna Crnić-Grotić and the President of the Civil Division of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia Damir Kontrec, while the Agreement of Cooperation between the Faculty of Law in Rijeka and the High Administrative Court of the Republic of Croatia was signed by the Faculty of Law Dean Vesna Crnić-Grotić and the President of the High Administrative Court of the Republic of Croatia Ante Galić. Conclusion of these agreements formalised the cooperation achieved so far and opens prospects for new forms of collaboration in the future.
Workshop for Researchers “Where to Publish?” held at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka
On 27 June 2018, workshop for researchers titled Where to Publish? Citation Databases and Bibliometric Indicators in the Field of Law was held at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. Organised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivana Kunda, Vice-Dean for Research and led by by Dr. Dejana Golenko, Director of the Faculty Library, the workshop offered an opportunity to faculty members to get informed and discuss choices concerning the publication of the research results based on factors, such as bibliometric indicators, database indexing and quality of the publication, especially taking into consideration new condition for obtaining scientific title.
