Faculty of Law on the 13th International Conference “Development of Public Administration”
Faculty of Law participated in the organization of the 13th International Conference “Development of Public Administration” on 1 and 2 June 2023 in Otočki Virovi and Vukovar. Together with the host University of Applied Sciences Ladislav Ružička from Vukovar, the co-organizers included the Polytechnic of Šibenik, Istarsko Veleučilište - Università Istriana di scienze applicate, Faculty of Law from Tuzla, Department of Law "Beder" University College, State School for Public Administration and Central and Eastern European Association for Public Administration. The conference was sponsored by the Ministry of Justice and Novi informator.
International Scientific Conference „LAW, SOCIETY AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE DIGITAL AGE“
Is the development of new standards and rules necessary for the protection of human rights in the digital world and online environment? Which new challenges does AI pose to the legal profession, and to the society in general? Can AI replace lawyers and how reliable are the results of legal chatbots? Is it even possible to protect privacy, as well as ensure transparency, fairness and trustworthiness of AI systems? What role is played by the data, including the language of data that “feeds” AI systems? These, and many other issues were discussed at the conference „Law, society and human rights in the digital age“, held on 27 April 2023 at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka in hybrid form. With participation and presentations of eminent academics and practitioners in the field, different pathways of regulation development were presented and many new issues opened for future debates.
The conference was co-organised by the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, Inter-University Centre of Excellence Opatija and Cost Action CA19143 - Global Digital Human Rights Network (GDHRNet).
Event about Contemporary Challenges in Football, Rijeka, 13-04-2023
On April 13, 2023, an event named "Contemporary Challenges in Football" was held at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka, focusing on legal and organisational issues of modern football.
The event was organised by the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy and the Centre for Sports Law, Policy and Diplomacy at the Faculty of Law in Rijeka with the support of partners, the Sport&EU Association and Football Legal, one of the most important sports law journals and portals. The programme started with the opening speeches by the Head of the Centre and the Jean Monnet Chair, assoc. prof. Vanja Smokvina and the Vice Rector of the University of Rijeka, prof. Marta Žuvić. This was followed by a round table discussion with prof. Richard Parrish from Edge Hill University, United Kingdom and external member of the Centre of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka; prof. Simona Kustec from the University of Primorska and former Minister of Sport of the Republic of Slovenia; Zvonimir Boban, UEFA Director of Football; assoc. prof. Vanja Smokvina, while the round table was moderated by Julien Zylberstein, UEFA Director of European Affairs and Good Governance and also an external member of the Centre of the Faculty of Law in Rijeka. The round table discussed topics such as the European model of sport, court cases before the CJEU in Luxembourg, the importance of the legal framework in sport, etc.
Workshop on human trafficking
On Thursday, April 6, 2023, a workshop on human trafficking was held at our faculty as part of the project “Protection of Women and Underrepresented Groups as Victims of Human Trafficking: Strengthening the Skills and Capacities of Legal Practitioners in Croatia”. The workshop was attended by legal experts from the judiciary, state attorney's office, police and attorneys who discussed current topics regarding trafficking in human beings. The workshop was organized by the Embassy of the United States of America in the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Association for Criminal Sciences and Practice and the Faculty of Law Rijeka.
Održana promocija diplomiranih studenata 23. i 24. veljače 2023.
Na Pravnom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Rijeci, ul. Hahlić 6 u Dvorani I održale su se tri promocije:
- Svečana promocija prvostupnika i prvostupnica javne uprave koji su diplomirali u razdoblju od 29. lipnja 2022. do 30. rujna 2022. godine održala se 23. veljače 2023. godine (četvrtak) u 13,30 sati.
- Svečana promocija magistara prava za studente i studentice koji su diplomirali u periodu od 28. siječnja 2022. do 18. srpnja 2022. godine održala se 24. veljače 2023. godine (petak) u 12,30 sati.
- Svečana promocija magistara prava za studente i studentice koji su diplomirali u periodu od 6. rujna 2022. do 22. prosinca 2022. godine održala se 24. veljače 2023. godine (petak) u 14,30 sati.
Conference on organisation of football in Europe, held in Luxembourg 21-02-2023
The Faculty of Law was a partner of an important international conference called "The economic and legal aspects of organization of football in Europe" which was held in Luxembourg on February 21, 2023. At the conference the participants discussed the legal and economic aspects of the football system in Europe, with special emphasis on recent developments about the European Football Super League and the legal proceedings being conducted before the European Court in Luxembourg. The organizers were CDES - Center for Law and Economics of Sport from Limoges, France and the University of Luxembourg. Together with our Faculty, the partners were the University of Limoges, France; University College of Northern Denmark, Denmark; Sport&EU Association and IASE – International Association of Economists in Sport.

New book published
In December 2022, the book, as a printed and as an e-book, entitled Good Governance in the Employment Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports in Europe: Understanding - Evaluating – Improving was published by the Faculty of Law in Rijeka in the edition of the Center for Sports Law, Sports Policy and Sports Diplomacy.
It is the final study on the employment relations of athletes in Olympic sports in 29 European countries (EU-27 + Norway and UK) conducted within the Erasmus + sport project Understanding, Evaluating, and Improving Good Governance in the Employment Relations of Athletes in Olympic Sports in Europe – EMPLOYS. Authors of the book, in addition to Associate Professor Vanja Smokvina are Professor Jürgen Mittag, Maximilian Seltmann and Lorenz Fiege (German Sport University Cologne, Germany), dr. Leanne O'Leary (Edge Hill University, UK), dr. Pawel Zembura (Institute for Sport Governance, Poland), dr. Luiz Haas and Thiago Santos (Universidade Europeia, Portugal). Also, partners to the Project and co-authors are Paulina Tomczyk who represents the European Elite Athletes Association (EU Athletes) together with Professor Manfred Laemmer and Sönke Schadwinkel, representing Olympics Academies.
