Ms. Maja Markovčić Kostelac on opportunities for maritime sector

On Wednesday, 14 April 2021 the Faculty virtually hosted, as part of a Rijeka Lecture on Comparative Law, Ms. Maja Markovčić Kostelac, Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). In almost two-hour presentation attended by students especially those enrolled in the course on Marine Environment Protection Act, as well as academics and members of Croatian Maritime Law Association, Ms. Mrakovčić Kostelac presented the whole spectrum of tasks covered by EMSA. She also talked about very ambitious goals set up by the latest Strategy of EMSA based on five pillars – Sustainability, Safety, Security, Simplification and Surveillance. Her speech then focused on the role of EMSA in the European Green Deal. Particularly interesting were her views on the impact of the European Green Deal on Croatian maritime shipping industry. She explained that Green Deal is associated with extensive financial instruments, which could cover the maritime sector, both on the side of ports and on the side of passenger fleet serving local community and the island connection.
